When assessing a pediatric patient, most often than not the parent or caregiver will be present for assistance and comfort purposes. As the nurse the goal is to obtain as much information from the child for accuracy and well-being assessment. In my opinion, a parent portrays suspicious behavior when answering all questions for the child possibly indicating over control or covering and preventing unwanted information to come to light. As the healthcare provider maintaining a safe environment is priority and educating the parent on the purpose of the assessment would be the best intervention. If behavior continues the suspicion should be reported to supervisor or appropriate authorities for evaluation in case of child abuse. Psychological abuse may be characterized by parent’s oppression, making their child existence feel meaningless and undesired (Rizvi & Najam, 2014). Child abuse may be the problem encountered and appropriate action by the nurse is essential for patient’s well-being.
